How many calories should I eat a day to maintain, or to lose weight?
ByI currently try to stay at (up to) 1200 calories and I want to lose about 10 pounds. How many calories would maintain my weight, and how many would help me lose?
Female
15 years old
5′3"
110 pounds
Not really active (walking between classes, walking up/down stairs at school, etc)
My calories come from fruits, vegetables, nuts, lean meats, and whole grains only. I don’t eat junk food.
It’s not just the calorie count, but also the quality of the calories that need to be considered to remain healthy in the process.
Simply, to maintain you need to take in only what is necessary and is burned off. To lose, you need to reduce the amount you take in, unless you are inactive, in which case it is safer and healthier (and frankly easier) to increase your activity level rather than reduce your caloric intake.

A average person should eat 2000 calories a day to maintain a weight. Eating less than 2000 calories a day you will eventually loose weight. Eating more than 2000 calories a day you gain weight.
thnx

I have a slight problem with an eating disorder.. I’m 5′2 and 104 lbs. But, when i went to the doctor at 118 pounds she told me not to lose weight. But, i didn’t listen lol. But, honestly, your at a healthy weight now. But if you wanna lose weight eat about 1200 to 1500 calories. My doctor told me a girl my age(13) should eat about 2000 cals per day to maintain. So probably that’s a good amount for you too. And yeah, just don’t do what i do. I usually eat 600-1000 calories per day :/

I would say you would just need to add exercise into your life… to be healthy and safe, your not suppose to go below the 1200 mark.. I would start out trying at LEAST 30 minutes 3 times per week… and because of your small built, doing strength 2 times per week would really make you stand out (however it may not make you see a difference in your weight because you would be adding muscle but losing some fat)

Since you are NOT obese, you can use these factors:
To lose weight, you multiply your current weight by 10 to get your daily calories.
To maintain weight, you multiply by 12-14. Start at 12, if you lose weight still, bump it to 14.

Hi!
To keep your current weight, you need 1350 calories with so little activety as you have. So 1200 calories a day sound good if you want to loose 10 pounds. But if they don’w come of, try some activety, I would not recomend getting less calories, or your body will only think its famine and slow down the metabolism:P

Your already of perfect weight in relation to your height, don’t lower down your calorie intake any further than 1000 a day, its unhealthy.. what you can do is increase your bodies activities, take a sport or walk an extra 30 minutes..

Calories is a large subject when it comes to weight loss. We need to learn three things: the volume of calories in our food, the volume of calories a certain activity burns every sixty minutes, and finally our own personal daily limit of calories. I found the responses to all of these questions by reading the website in the box below, they have a lot of guidance, I worked off 8 pounds by taking their advice.

You sound thin already, your diet sounds fine, but I don’t know if 1,200 is enough.
